Reentry NYC

ReentryNYC works to develop spiritual resources for people in prison who are preparing to return to their communities in New York City, and fosters programs based in temples, churches, and mosques that support individuals and families affected by incarceration.
Below is a description of our Faith Anchors program.

The Faith Anchors program helps connect people preparing to leave prison and return to New York City with a faith community. Here's how it works:

  • A person who is preparing to leave prison contacts us by letter and asks to be connected with a faith/spiritual community in NYC. The contact can be at any point prior to release – even years in advance.

  • We write back and ask the person to write a brief essay of their faith journey – what they have thought about, beliefs they have had and possibly changed, what they are looking for, what faith tradition they feel most connected to.... We also ask if they know what neighborhood they want to be connected with – if possible, we try to link people with houses of worship in neighborhoods they request, though this is often not possible.

  • We reach out to different faith communities and try to find a volunteer from that community who can correspond with the person in prison and stay connected through when they are released. That person becomes a sort of “faith anchor” who can also meet the person once back in NYC and go with him/her to worship/practice services. Most of this work is initially done through Pastors, Priests, Ministers, Imams, Senseis, Nuns, Roshis, Rabbis... We contact them, explain our work, and ask if they can link us to a person in their community.

  • When people are from a faith community where we cannot find a connection, we stay in touch and, if possible and requested, we can send in material and books from the person's faith tradition. We do this with a lot of people from Hindu, Taoist, Sikh... traditions, until we can find a “faith anchor” for them somewhere in NYC.

Feel free to contact us if you want more information, or if you would like to be a Faith Anchor in your community.
